How to Replace a Front Crankshaft Main Seal
There is one mechanical system called a crankshaft pulley which helps distribute this engine power to other systems. In layman terms, the crankshaft takes engine power and transmits it to the wheels which move the vehicle. While this is going on, the crankshaft pulley uses accessory belts to power other components of the vehicle, such as the alternator and power steering pump. In addition, the crankshaft pulley also reduces the vibrations which exist in the accessory belts.
That way, the other connected systems will not get damaged by them. The car crankshaft pulley may seem like a minor part in a vehicle, but it is actually a very important part because this part contains harmonic balancer and connected to another important moving parts. If the crankshaft pulley were to go bad, it could spell trouble for the entire operation of the vehicle.
You would surely notice a lot of diverse symptoms, some worse than others. But you should replace your crankshaft pulley as soon as you notice any of these symptoms. The first symptom that will likely come up are engine vibrations. As we mention above, every crankshaft pulley usually contains a harmonic balancer.
This harmonic balancer is designed to absorb the vibrations of the engine as you accelerate faster. This will cause the engine to shake profusely the faster you go. The crankshaft pulley is responsible for powering the alternator. So naturally, if the crankshaft pulley goes bad, then you can expect the alternator to stop working.
This problem will reveal itself with all your lights flickering and eventually shutting off entirely. The power steering pump is another component which is powered by the crankshaft pulley. The function of the power steering pump is to pump hydraulic fluid so that hydraulic pressure can be generated in the steering system.
If the engine vibrations go on for too long, they will eventually start damaging the transmission system. This means that the bearings, input shaft, and gears may all take damage from the vibrations. When your vehicle is parked or stopped with the engine running, you may experience irregular engine speed.
If the dampener has gone bad, then the engine speed will be all over the place. It is not the most expensive replacement job, but it is not too cheap either.

The front part of the crankshaft is where the balancer or dampener same thing is bolted too and is where the serpentine belt is driven from. Typically the front main seal is pressed into the front timing cover or into the seal housing on timing belt motors.
This seal is constructed with a metal outer ring a rubber lip seal using a small circular spring which holds tension on the lip seal as it rides against the sealing surface of the harmonic balancer hub. A harmonic balancer or dampener is a weighted circular part unit used to help an engine run smoothly and keep in balance. As in with any engine seal heat and engine vibration can cause the seal to become hard and loose its sealing ability which will allow residual engine crankcase pressure to force oil past the seal and out from the engine.
Because the seal rides against the inner hub of the balancer it can cause grooves to be created in the hub which case the lip seal cannot hold oil inside of the engine.
The cost of the front main seal is mostly labor. The car will need to be jacked up in most cases and supported on jack stands.
Crank Pulley Bolt Removal - Easy Way!
Wear protective eyewear and gloves with the engine cool. Anytime you are working on the engine front there is the potential of creating short circuit if you touch a wrench or any metal piece from battery power to ground.
To prevent this remove the negative cable of the battery to stop the electrical power to the car. The serpentine belt is used to drive the accessories of the engine such as the alternator and water pump. This belt must be removed to gain access to the dampener which must be removed to replace the front main seal. For this step most engines are a little bit different you must disassemble the engine to where you can access the front dampener bolt.
This means removing the fan clutch on most rear wheel drive cars and it can also mean removing the radiator. Most front wheel drive cars can follow this guide with minor variations.
If you are using an air impact gun this step is a lot easier but if not do worry you will just need to remove the starter so you are able to gain access to the engine flywheel. This is so you can hold the engine from turning by wedging a large standard screwdriver between the teeth of the flywheel and the engine block or transmission case.
If you have an open access to the bottom of the flywheel which some older cars do they make a flywheel holder tool which you can get from Amazon. Do not try to stop the engine from turning over any other way or you can damage the engine.
Use a large socket 22mm to 24mm to remove the dampener bolt by turning it counterclockwise. No engine that we know of has a reverse thread dampener bolt. This bolt is tight about foot pounds so make sure you have a good grip of the ratchet and make sure the socket is squarely on the bolt to avoid rounding of the bolt head.The 5.
The crank pulley has no woodruff key, is not indexed and is pressed on. If the crank shaft is in the engine and if the engine is in the car I would put the car up on jack stands for safety. Remove the water pump pulley. That will allow you to remove the v-belt easily. Remove the plastic mud shield on the passenger side of the engine. Then remove the crankshaft pulley it is probably already off and you are working on the woodruff key that was indexing the crank pully. Make sure that you rotate the engine such that the key is pointing down.
Be sure that you stuff a rag in around the snout of the crankshaft such that when the key breaks out of the keyway it cannot fall into the oil pan. The way I have gotten stubborn keys out of keyways was to go after them with a small hammer and punch.
How to Remove the Harmonic Balancer from a Chevrolet
I try to worm the punch under the key which will lift the end of the key and make it easier to grasp and remove. Frankly I have never failed to get a key out of a keyway. Generally they are only a slight interference fit.
The other method is to fit the pulley over the crank nose which has a valley or keyway machined along about an inch or so along the length of the nose and then place the pully onto the crank nose and line up a corresponding machined keyway in the pully and insert a metal key into the space created by the keyways.
The vibration damper pulley and the crankshaft pulley are pressed together with a rubber sleeve. They are held onto the crank by a key and keyway. I've never had to use a puller. Usually when you take the bolt out of the crank it will just wiggle off. I've never had one on their that tight that it wouldn't come off just with my hands. It's pretty easy on an aircooled engine. The bolt that holds it on doesn't get very tight, so what you need to do is to lock the crank pulley somehow--I've done it by just squeezing the belt together real tight with my hand--and removing the bolt with a 30mm socket.
If you stil On a watercooled engine you'll need an impact wrench. In either case, once the bolt is out the pulley slides off the crank. You might need a puller on a watercooled engine; I never have used one on an aircooled engine--you can normally just wiggle the pulley a little and it slides off. Helpful hint: on an aircooled car put a little high-temp grease on the end of the crank before you put the pulley back on.

Left unchecked, these vibrations will quickly rattle the engine apart. The harmonic balancer, sometimes referred to as the "vibration dampener," is responsible for absorbing these vibrations to a tolerable level. Removing a harmonic balancer is a fairly straightforward task, particularly on a Chevrolet, as a Chevy balancer is easily accessed once the lower drive pulley is removed.
Remove the accessory drive belts from the lower drive pulley.
The lower pulley is bolted to the front of the harmonic balancer. This pulley transfers the energy produced by the crankshaft to the engine's accessories, such as the power steering pump, alternator and air conditioning compressor, via a number of belts. To remove the belts, locate each accessory's mounting brackets which are used to hold the accessory to the engine. Each mounting bracket features a number of bolts.
Loosen the mounting bolts with a wrench, then push the accessory towards the engine to slacken the drive belt. Once slackened, the drive belts can be pulled away from the lower pulley. Remove the lower drive pulley from the harmonic balancer. Chevrolet pulleys use three bolts to hold the pulley to the face of the harmonic balancer. Remove the three bolts with a wrench, then pull the pulley off of the harmonic balancer.
Remove the harmonic balancer's single retaining bolt. The retaining bolt is located in the center of the harmonic balancer and is used to hold the harmonic balancer to the end of the crankshaft. Before entering the harmonic balancer, the bolt is inserted through a large washer, which is used to evenly distribute the pressure created by the bolt against the crankshaft. Remove the bolt with a wrench, taking care not to loose the washer once the bolt is removed.
Assemble the harmonic balancer puller. A harmonic balancer puller consists of a large metal piece shaped like a triangle, a single threaded rod and a number of different sized bolts. Insert the threaded rod into the threads located in the center of the harmonic balancer puller, then twist the rod in a clockwise direction until the rod threads through the center of the puller.
Attach the puller to the harmonic balancer. The puller attaches to the face of the harmonic balancer in the same manner that the lower pulley attached to the balancer. Harmonic balancer puller kits come with several sets of bolts of varying size. Only three of the bolts are required to remove the Chevrolet balancer. Find the set of bolts which fits the three holes that were used to attach the pulley to the balancer, then place the puller against the face of the balancer.
Insert one bolt through each corner of the puller and into the balancer. Tighten each bolt with a wrench. Remove the harmonic balancer. To remove the balancer, turn the threaded rod which runs through the center of the puller in a clockwise direction with a wrench. The threaded rod will eventually contact the tip of the crankshaft. Continue to turn the threaded rod until the puller slides off of the crankshaft. As the threaded rod pushes against the crankshaft, the three bolts which attach the puller to the balancer will pull the balancer off of the crankshaft.
